Congratulations to YAA’s very own Dory Shea who was profiled in the December 16th, 2004 edition of Town Talk News:
Dory Shea was born with spina bifida and uses a wheelchair, but she doesn't let her disability prevent her from pursuing her dream of becoming an advocate for other people with disabilities.
Shea, 25, lives in Middletown Township and is a part-time communications major at Penn State University's Delaware County campus in Lima. She graduated from Sun Valley High School in 1999. Shea has used a wheelchair full-time since she was ten years old. She uses Paratransit and SEPTA public transportation to get to and from school, but hopes to get her driver's license sometime next year. Apart from her physical disability, Shea has a minor learning disability that affects her capacity to focus and organize. Despite that, she's an intelligent, articulate student with a positive attitude and a keen desire to succeed. "Since I've had the disability so long, I've adapted," she said. "I've developed good problem solving skills." Shea became an advocate soon after arriving at Penn State. One day, she discovered that a disabled-accessible stall in a restroom wasn't large enough for her to turn her wheelchair. She approached campus officials and told them about her dilemma. She saw positive results within a year. "They made the accessible stall even bigger and installed automatic doors," she recalled.
