According to a December 20, 2004 article on Stuff, New Zealand Vietnam veterans are threatening the New Zealand Government with a multi-million dollar lawsuit. According to the article, the veterans are incensed at getting nothing more than an apology from Prime Minister Helen Clark for their exposure to Agent Orange, former Vietnam Veterans Association president John Moller, of Kawerau, said. The Government still had taken no responsibility or accountability for what had happened, Mr Moller said.
"What makes vets so angry is that the Government is compensating prisoners but won't do anything about the children of vets."
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) pays disability compensation to Vietnam veterans with injuries or diseases that began in, or were aggravated by, their military service. These are called “service-connected” disabilities. VA has several pamphlets describing VA benefits. They are available on the Internet at: www.va.gov/publ/direc/eds/edspamph.htm. If you do not have Internet access at home, you can get free access at most public libraries. Publications are also available at your VA Regional Office or by calling these offices at 1-800-827-1000. Information about the Agent Orange benefits can be found on the VA's Agent Orange Website.
